Hyperglycemia symptoms include thirst, frequent urination, nausea, abdominal pain, weakness, fruity-scented breath and confusion. Severe case of hyperglycemia can lead to diabetic ketoacidosis (diabetic coma). Patients who are on insulin therapy or other diabetic medications can experience Hypoglycemia which can include sweating, shaking, dizziness, increased heartbeat, hunger, weakness, or headache. The best way to maintain blood sugar levels is to monitor regularly with blood sugar monitoring devices.
The traditional blood monitoring device requires frequent finger sticks to measure blood glucose levels. However, Abbott introduced the FreeStyle Libre 14 day system which is a glucose monitoring device that allows painless scans that replace painful finger sticks. FreeStyle Libre is a continuous glucose monitoring system consisting of a handheld reader and a sensor temporarily adhered to the back of the upper arm. The sensor has a thin, flexible filament measuring glucose within interstitial fluid every minute. The patient can get a reading of the glucose level by holding the reader within 1.5 inches of the sensor. This new system will drastically change how patients with diabetes monitor their glucose levels.
